Oh Rebecca! I just love this! You say you made it without a pattern? Please share how. I would love to make one each for Lydia and Elizabeth. I had fun reading all about your Christmas and can't wait to see more pictures. How much longer till peanut makes an appearance??? ~Jen
This might take a while...but here goes. The shape of the shawl I just fudged by folding it the way I thought it would look nice. I cut the neck opening (a bit too big for my tastes--my original plan was to add a straight collar but it proved too much of a challenge for midnight!) It helped to have a same-size model (CORYNN) to help me with sizing. I blanket stitched around the whole thing then added a button, buttonhole, and the mitten pockets. For the mitten pockets I traced around Corynn's hand leaving lots of extra room for seam allowance and "hand-slippage-innage". I have to say. I didn't come up with that myself. One day while I was shopping I saw in a window of The Children's Place a shawl with mitten pockets and thought-"HEY I will do that too!" I then just cut slits by the opening so she could slip her hands in there.
As for the hat-I measured Corynn's head and made the band that length plus two inches (to attach it together.) Then I found a similar style hat of Corynns'-traced the circle adding three inches then put running stitches in it. I gathered the stitches until the hole was the same size as the band circle-then stitched it.
Like I said, I was able to do alot of it by fudging it because Corynn was similar size but since you all seemed so interested, I looked online and here is a way to do it simply. Leave it to me to do it the 'hard way'!
Jen-Peanut is due April 10th so I have three more months to go. I hope they go as fast as the LAST three months have!
Abby-I started my projects at 4 in the afternoon and finished at 11:30. Up until the time Corynn went to bed, though, I was interrupted quite often. I was ACTUALLY motivated to stay up even later to make the matching apron for myself-but thought that not a responsible decision given the fact that I would be staying up so late for the next few nights! :-)
Michelle-I had SO much fleece that I bought on super deal (for those baby buntings) I wasn't worried about it flopping because I could just cut more. That made it much easier on me. I love hats and want to learn how to make more. This is the first one I have done but it seems like they aren't TOO hard. :-)

ReplyDeleteYou did such a great job on all your handcrafted gifts!
ReplyDeleteDare I ask how late you stayed up that night? :)
And where'd you get the idea for little "mitten" hands on the shawl? If the idea originated in your own head, you're a genius!
Yes, you have to share how you did this. I am afraid to make a hat without a pattern. It would probably turn out 3 sizes too big! :P
ReplyDeleteIt looks very cute on her! Good job.
