YAY! I was able to finally scan the veg. plans (still don't know what I did to make it work!) I am hoping to get about 20 tomato plants. 5 or 6 cherry tomatos, 7/8 Roma's, and 6/7 slicing. I will also be purchasing a flat of green pepper plants and a flat of HOT pepper plants. I am growing some pepper plants with seed also but sinceI have never grown pepper plants from seed before, I want to ensure that I will definately be harvesting SOME. The rest of the garden will be put in as seed. Last year I was able to start quite a few of my plants from seed indoors-but with moving and Peanut, that didn't happen. I am trying to brace myself NOW for the cost of the tomato plants... Posted by Picasa

Hi there, I have this stuff here for you...the tapes, the quilt, and the bags of clothes, and homeschooling stuff...was checking to see if you wanted me to save it for you till we came to Altoona or what. In particular the clothes...if you aren't interested in them I can pass them along to someone else or the Goodwill. If you do it's not a big deal to store them...I just need to know so I can decide where to put them if I need to keep them for you. Just let me know either way! Hope you have a blessed weekend. ~Jen

  2. Rebecca,

Thanks for sharing your garden plans! I'll have to take pictures of our veggie gardens and out them on my blog.

Scott put in all our 50 tomato plants yesterday and my jalapeno peppers. Tonight he planted the rest of my peppers, green, red and yellow. We also have peas, spinach, potatoes, beets, some of our lettuce, and some of our green beans in! We still have squash, carrots, onions, cucumbers, sweet corn, herbs, etc. to put in.

Our tomatoes weren't actually that expensive. We paid about $2 for a 6-pack. When you consider how many tomatoes you will get off one plant it's really not that bad at all. And they're so much tastier than store bought!

  3. It is so neat to see how other people are doing their gardens! I haven't really made a plan so to say... I just stare at the seed packets, then stare at my plot and decide where to put what. THEN, I put my handy dandy homemade seed markers down so I remember where I put things. I really should write out where things are, though, just because I can fully see Stephen or Matthew thinking my stone markers are neat and carrying them around in their Tonka truck, thus rendering my markers useless! haha! :)

In looking at your plan, I thought you might find this of interest: On my packet of corn, it states, "Corn should always be planted in a 3-4 row block (instead of one long row). Since corn is wind-pollinated, planting in a block produces ears that are filled out better with kernels."

  4. Hey Leah! Thanks for all the comments! You will have a TREMENDOUS amount of homegrown goodness at your fingertips this summer! This year our vegetable garden will be about twice the size of any previous garden-but still small compared to yours. But though it is small for you it is BIG for me-I am really going to have to work hard to USE all the stuff, whether canning or freezing. Really, I had hardly enough yield from our own garden to do anything but use it fresh in my previous gardens. No stocking up-so this experience will be interesting!

Your tomato plants ARE cheaper! Last year I bought mine at Iron Kettle farm and you buy them by the INDIVIDUAL plant! (Most of which were nearly $2.00!!!) I am STILL looking for a greenhouse down here-I really don't think buying plants at WALMART would give you the healthiest plants! :-) I hope I can find a similar deal on tomatoes! (PS-please post pictures of your gardens! I would love to see them! AND of the boys and that fawn!!!)

Michelle~thanks for that tidbit about corn. I might have to modify it afterall. I have NEVER done well with corn-maybe that is why!

  5. Very nice garden plot! I hope you like cherry tomatoes! I had one plant last year, and was totally over run with them...so many of them had to spoil because I couldnt get to them fast enough, and you really cant preserve them easily. I cant wait to see your photos of the finished product! By the Way... I bought my Tomato plants from Wal*Mart...and they flourished...they were huge, taller than me...and the fruit was delicious.

  8. Hey Rebecca,

Just wondering if you guys still have our email? I would like to email you pics and such, but do not have your new one. Maybe I will email Leah and ask her to send it to me... (Don't want to post my email here!)

Just wanted to let you know I also posted a comment under Monday, May 22nd's entry, since that is a bit far removed now! :-) (It is about the "free-bates" at Rite Aid, etc.) What a nice colorful rendition on paper of your garden to be--I can tell you had fun playing with your new Sharpies! Can't wait to see pics of it with the actual flowers and herbs growing and thriving! Is your email still the same as it was before you moved? If so, I hope to finally get an email birth announcement out sometime here shortly along with a pic or 2. I am sure everyone has been wondering if I had the babies or not yet, and if we are surviving, etc. Actually, things are going quite well . . . the girls are wonderful little babies so far, and are soooo precious! Your little guy is getting so big already, and I think he looks so much like Matt!

  11. Your garden looks great! I've planted tomatoes, corn, green beans, squash, lettuce, spinach, carrots, peppers, and cucumbers, a lot of the same things you have! It's so fun to have a garden, and home-grown veggies taste so yummy! I hope your growing plans go well.
