What you do in your house is worth as much as if you did it up in heaven for our Lord God. We should accustom ourselves to think of our position and work as sacred and well-pleasing to God, not on account of the position and work, but on account of the word and faith from which the obedience and the work flow. ~ Martin Luther

Greenwood Furnace

Ever since we moved here, I have been in awe of the great beauty of the area. This area would not be what it is without the Iron Furnaces dotting the land. In fact, many of our roads are named after the furnaces that reside there.

Last week, we had a grand adventure on Matt's day off. We met up with two dear families and spent the ENTIRE day together. The morning we spent doing some local flea market thrifting and went to a livestock auction/carnival. (On Monday, I will show you the TREASURE I found...) Then, we headed to a local park for some lunch. This particular park houses one such furnace. Matt and I went to check it out.

This is how it 'used' to work. They would dump iron ore down the top of the furnace, melt it and then shape it. Looks a lot different now that it is 'retired'.

You just can't believe the size of this thing. This picture doesn't do it justice.

This one does a bit better job. Look closely and you will see Matt inside the furnace.

Great pictures... But I'm wondering how the weather was, for your sale?

I'm afraid that if you were blogging pictures, it was a rainy day.. -sigh-

That is so cool you posted this. I too live in South central PA and see these huge monstrous furnaces all over but never knew much about them except they are so big.

Looks like you had a great day with the family and friends...nothing better in the world.

Hope the yard sale went well. I had one today too. I made a little money got rid of some stuff being unused and got a little burnt. :)

Karen~ no kidding! You are practically a NEIGHBOR than! I just love em. There is a house down the road that just happens to have one on THEIR property! I WISH! I would plant trailing roses down em and flowers around the base. They have it in a field with cows. :-)
