What you do in your house is worth as much as if you did it up in heaven for our Lord God. We should accustom ourselves to think of our position and work as sacred and well-pleasing to God, not on account of the position and work, but on account of the word and faith from which the obedience and the work flow. ~ Martin Luther

Tuesday Doings

Today it is rainy and dreary and, if the weatherman is correct, will see some severe weather throughout the day.  I knew this, of course, and planned accordingly to hunker down inside for the day.  In a very real sense, the weather dictates a really large portion of my days.  I do laundry on sunny days only, so that I can hang them to dry outside.  I decide when to harvest things depending upon the weather (onions and potatoes, for example, need to dry well after harvesting so you chose a dry stretch to harvest those things.  I try to plan warming things (like baking or canning) for chilly weather (if I can help it!) or avoid them on hot days (again, IF I can help it.  Because I am so often busy outside, I really enjoy rainy days and the feeling of being stuck indoors.  They seem quieter some how and give me a chance to do indoor things that are often overlooked in our busy "outside lives".

Even on the rainy days, there is plenty to keep my busy.

  • Woke up, made Matt an english muffin.  Kissed him goodbye.  Made myself some hot cocoa.
  • Wrote Opa a letter.
  • Made breakfast (omelets)
  • did animal chores
  • put four loads of laundry (from last night) away
  • uploaded (downloaded?) photos from camera to computer.  Blogged.
  • Hung a light fixture in girls' room
  • diced a batch of green peppers for dehydrating (about 16 peppers worth)
  • Corynn made lunch while I~
  • deep cleaned boys room- swept, vacuumed, organized, etc.
  • tidied Matts' and my bedroom
  • harvested a (big) bowl of carrots from garden
  • children went down for rest time and I used that time for important business (and lunch!):
  • put in an order at Veritas Press
  • paid bills for the month, balanced account, filed and sent paperwork, made various important calls, answered a few emails.
  • tidied Spare Oom and office desk
  • swept Spare Oom
  • threaded a needle for Andrew about 20 times as he worked on an embroidery project.
  • had children tidy mudroom before Papa came home
  • Straightened school books into a nice neat pile on dining table (A sad contradiction~ Must.Plan.School.Year.Tonight while Still.Needing.Room.To.Eat.)
  • Cleaned hallway of piles to "put away" from kids' room cleanings
  • Made supper (Italian Sausage and Navy Bean soup with Swiss Chard and some Creamy Corn Casserole to go with it.)
  • straightened living room before Matt got home
  • Gathered garbage from the four corners of Hopestead- Tomorrow is Garbage Day!
  • cleaned sink and counter and mirror in bathroom
  • ate dinner.  Matt read.
  • Did dishes, wiped counters and table down.
  • Swept dining room
  • Children went to bed.  I started school prep.
  • Laminated some school things- including childers' schedules for this upcoming year.
  • Worked on school plans (art and composers of the month) for about 40 minutes and now it is 11:11 and I am taking that as a sign I need to get to bed.
It looks like a lot- but I didn't even get to can the carrots I intended to can today.  :-(   The story of my life...

It was lovely to have a glimpse into your day & I also almost never get everything on my 'to do'list done~ itś part of being a Mum I think. Hope your school year goes well ~ we are counting down til ours is done!!

I'm demanding (via letter, blog post, smoke signals, or ESP) to know what you are doing for art and composers. I am completely and utterly LOST on that one. (we're kinda doing Mendelssohn, but not exactly. And art? Pah! Resources and talent are lacking for me...)

Cold and rainy here too. We had chili last night, with which I got just a tad carried away in the spice department. Children had mostly chips, cheese and sour cream, with chili to give it some color. B. and I LOVED it.

Anyway Bravo and well done!

Well, you were certainly more productive than I was! Our power was out most of the day. The hazards of living in a parsonage that is totally dependent on electric - septic, well, stove, heat, lights, everything - is that it's hard to get anything done when the electric is out. And I wasn't expecting it so had nothing prepped. We don't own a generator and it was so dark in the house yesterday that I could barely see. Terrible day! I did manage to get some school done with my daughter and made some cards for the market on Sunday. I definitely need to save my pennies for a generator.

Thanks for sharing your days with us this week. It really is inspiring and motivating! :) I'd love to know how you're scheduling school for each of your children. We officially have 3 students this year and I'm struggling to get everything done each day.

Bonnie, if you're looking for free resources for for art and composer studies I have two suggestions, http://www.amblesideonline.org/curriculum.shtml . If you look at the top left corner you will see links for Art Study and Composers. The other is http://simplycharlottemason.com/planning/scmguide/ . If you scroll down you will see links for Picture Study and Music Study. HTH :)

Bonnie, when my children were younger I used this book: http://www.amazon.com/Discovering-Great-Artists-Hands-On-Children/dp/0935607099/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1348057179&sr=8-2&keywords=art+with+the+masters. I would get art books from the library on the works of whatever artist we were working on and then do the art project from this book that matched that style. I also taught a homeschool co-op one year using it and the kids loved it!

Rebecca, you are really such an inspiration to me! We have help in our home (we live in Africa where there is a ton of unemployment and is one way to help, and its a huge help to me!) but it does make for some extreme laziness! I am 7 months pregnant too, so I find myself making lots of excuses for getting nothing done each day! Your posts have been a real conviction to me! Thanks!

Would also love to hear your art and music plans! Also, random question, but what grammar program do you use? The only one I've heard about is Shurley and it sounds like it takes a long time, like 45min with each kiddo! Goodness. Also heard about Rod and Staff. Just wondering what you use.

Bonnie~ once I am through posting my daily to-dos this week I plan on posting all homeschooling posts next. I will make one specifically for art and composers JUST for you. (and you Leah! and you Sandy!)

I will say the links Leah provided are great resources and I LOVE the book Terri suggested (I ought to buy it as often as I borrow it from the library!)

I think I will answer your questions then.

Terri~ so sorry to hear about the power outtages! Whenever the electric goes out here I get in panic mode because I have three freezers and a whole lot of food (and WORK!) would be wasted if it were to stay out. I agree with you- a generator should be something I start saving up for too.

Sandy~ Being 7 months pregnant is work in and of itself. Even if you get nothing else done, your body is growing a baby which is pretty impressive. And far more worthwhile than anything I can cross off on my lists!
