Homegrown eggs result in fluorescent breakfast pizza. FYI. |
It is rainy and dreary and SO, SO COLD in this house! We have no form of heat other than wood in this house and that ran out for the year quite some time ago. What's worse is that with every damp, rainy, windy cold day the house gets that much more damp, windy and cold. I am thinking gas insert fireplace. I am thinking pellet stove. I am thinking GET ME OUT OF THIS FREEZING HOUSE BEFORE THE TIP OF MY NOSE FALLS OFF. It is spring, for goodness sake. I am not supposed to freeze to death in April, even April 30th.
I think I might go uptown today. Shopping. In a car with a heater. In stores with a thermostat. I need to get a few things anyway. Sympathy cards. Wedding presents.
In the next five weeks I am going to THREE weddings, one of which is this weekend! All the brides are young and lovely. And as the daughters of my friends get married off, I catch myself wondering at the fact that I was once 'the young bride'. It seems like just yesterday but apparently it was longer ago than I thought. I have never felt old until now. I am not old yet, am I? Shouldn't my peers be getting married still and not the next generation?
Corynn asked me this very morning "Mama, when you were born had pants been invented for girls yet?"
Gee willikers.
I suppose I can't be the young bride AND the mother of a 10 year old who asks about the invention of girl pants. Or of a boy who catches dozens of frogs in every stage of development with my kitchen strainer. Or of a girl in the LIL SIS shirt who finds little flowers to spoil me with. Or the boy who says proudly "Mama, take a picture of me with my toolbox!" and then notices that the picture doesn't properly show his pocketknife so asks for a redo.
While the fancy white dress and the painted fingernails that don't chip with dish-washing and diaper-changes, the bouquet of flowers and the smile that just won't fade is such a beautiful beginning to a new season of life...
the life lived is pretty beautiful too.
In the last photo, it looks like they are playing following the leader!
ReplyDeleteI think the older we get, the age we used to think was old gets pushed further and further ahead. As they say now, 40 is the new 20 or something. Kids definately have a way of putting you in your place. My oldest daughter told me once, "Mom! You have a LOT of gray hair!" I was barely 30 then. lol
ReplyDeleteSorry it is so cold. Its just right here in Alabama right now, but we know the heat is coming.
ReplyDeleteYou are so young! Much younger than you think or feel you are. Today I was at a class and was talking about getting older and one of the elderly gentlemen in the group said "I don't want to hear that, you are young" ( I am a grandmother, so not young at all). Trust me when I say it You are young! And COLD!
ReplyDeleteYour children are getting so big, especially Judah and Adele. That is what makes me feel old sometimes- watching my children grow up. It's, of course, a good thing but a little sad too.
ReplyDeletepray tell which of your boys bravely wrangled that pokey-beaked bird? oh my. and in his Easter finest, no less?! love it. love every glimpse. beautiful life, indeed.
ReplyDeleteJudah Bear is getting so BIG! Your children are beautiful. (And you are not old.)

My children's friends are getting married and having babies. It all seems so strange. I don't feel old at all. In fact, I think you'll be much like me, having started your family young.
ReplyDeleteI'm 43, and while my children are grown, or nearly so, most of my peers have very young children- under the age of 5.
Your friends must all be older than you, eh?
ReplyDeleteI am 39 and no one I know have kids old enough to get married. These people getting married must be quite young.
Today my eldest son and his family came to spend the weekend. The children have grown so much in the past month since I last saw them. And honestly, it's not been that long since you last posted a photo of Judah but my heart stopped at how grown up he suddenly looks, a boy, not a toddler.
ReplyDeleteMamaHen- enjoy that heat for me, would ya?
ReplyDeleteBeth- the boys have a way of stringing plastic bags/balloons/etc. to string and then to sticks to make kite-like contraptions. One stick still had string and the bird's foot got caught in it. We saved its' life but I told the boys 'you almost ENDED its life by not taking care of that string when you were done with it! As much of a tumbleweed as Judah is, he is VERY leery of wild animals of any sort. After he sees other people touching them- a few weeks later he *MIGHT* too. So it is Andrew the fearless holding the poor thing!
Terri- the pictures of Judah with the pocketknife had the very same effect on me. Something about those pictures in particular leave me feeling a bit sad. My baby!
Corynn's comment? Priceless.
