Here comes baby dress number 2, the THIRD contribution to sewing seeds I have made. I am really enjoying myself but I really need to slow down. I have in-laws coming this weekend! I better get my tushy moving onto things like meal planning, laundry, and ACK!!! CLEANING!
It is getting harder to come up with different styles and coordinating fabric to make these dresses from my own stash without going to the store. I had to make the ties of this dress out of BLACK because that is what I had. Argh.
It is a mock pillowcase dress...I didn't use a pillowcase but used the same concept. Instead of making the neckline gathered with ribbon, I put elastic in it and added ties only to go around the shoulder. I didn't want the ribbon to come out accidently or anything. It will fit a 12 month old, I expect.
To add a bit of 'pretty' to an otherwise very simple fabric, I added bright red scalloping to the bottom edge, a bow to the neck...
and then I embroidered a little flower design in the corner with a few random dots.
It is simple but I think it looks really comfortable and that is important!!

GOING BACK: Ever since we visited the Owens' house with their girls, Corynn has been obsessed with getting a sister.
"Mama, I would really like for you to give me a sister...we can go pick her up today in the car!"
"Mama, these shoes can be for my SISTER."
"Mama, will God give me a sister tomorrow?"
One particularly funny time, she said, pointing to her bed..."Mama, when I get a sister, she will sleep HERE in my bed with me (pointing to the right side) and Andrew will sleep HERE (pointing to the middle) and I will sleep on THIS side (pointing to the left) because we will love each other lots."
I have tried telling her that getting a sister is not a next-day occurance, and that I don't know when or IF she WILL get a sister, but she will have none of it...she WILL get a sister.
FAST FORWARD to TODAY:
Corynn has had lots of questions regarding the "Children in Africa" ever since I started stitching these skirts. She told me today that she thought it was wonderful that I was helping them to get clothes and she told me she wanted to help them get Mama's and Papa's and homes. Then she said, "WE can give them a home!!!"
Wow. I think I am in WAY over my head now! ;-)
The dress us really cute. I like the embroidery you did on it. It put a very nice finishing touch with pizazz too.

I need your help! I tried to make your "best gravy ever" and failed miserably...It was a big ol' floury mess...I followed your recipe & had such high hopes...Any suggestions? Mine looked nothing like your picture...I wonder what I did wrong?

ReplyDeleteVictoria...Hmmmmmm. It works for me every time but I don't use measurements so perhaps I steered you wrong in the flour amount. Which method did you use-the actual recipe or my recipe?
here is my suggestion. Sprinkle 1/8 c flour over the browned meat and allow to bubble and thicken. Perhaps that will be thick enough. If you want it more thick-just put a bit more flour in a measuring cup and mix with water to get the lumps out and add that to the gravy and let simmer for a bit longer.
If it was a floury mess-there was too much flour. Try that and see if it makes a difference. Also, make sure there is a BIT of grease in the pan to soak UP the flour!
Sorry the first time didn't work out...please try it again and let me know how it works out!
Wendy-if you plan on making it this weekend, maybe you should do this too...just in case.
Of course-remember if too much flour has already been added, you can always add lots of milk to balance it out. You may have to switch to a saucepan at the point versus a frying pan, though.

Thanks for the tips...I will try again. I used your method of throwing some flour on the greasy sausage & it melded so nicely...but then I think I got nervous & added more flour ( I know rookie move)...and then it was downhill from there. I will try again & let you know when I've mastered it!
