Dangles

When this little girl was a little baby, I wanted in the worst way to get her ears pierced. You know, maybe slow down the "Oh-what a cute little guy" remarks that followed, especially considering she was bald until about... last year! :-)

But NO. Matt has a soft spot for unadulterated ears and said Not on your life. He also said that when she was old enough to express interest, THEN, He would allow it. That way, we didn't put a permenant hole in her ears if she wasn't going to want it later on.

So, me being the wonderfully submissive wife that I am, obliged both with a smile on my face and in my heart. (ha!)

Now she is five and wants earrings in the worst way. Matt is now backing up the train because he still can't get past protecting those earlobes from being tainted.

Corynn is fighting back though, by wearing the gaudy dress up earrings everywhere she possibly can.

Now, as much as I love her sweet little empty earlobes and would *probably* at this point prefer if she kept them pure and unblemished, I would MUCH rather see a nice tiny pair of diamond studs or gold balls than to be greeted with flashing silver dangles at every turn.

ANYTHING is better than THAT, right?!?

  2. I was 4 when I got my ears pierced, and I screamed bloody murder, which could be why the holes are uneven, And the lady got mad at me because I cried! (I think thats why I hate lime lolli-pops)
I had begged for about a year, before my dad gave in. Audrey is happy with her clip ons at the moment, but I know the day is coming when she to will want a little ear bling. Sigh. I don't remember giving my children permission to grow up.

  3. P.S. I only now read your previous posts, about your grandparents, and I'm so glad you and your sister were able to visit. I am in awe of all your Opa has done- and of how well he (outwardly) is coping with Alzheimers.
My prayers for your Oma's speedy recovery, and that you ALL are able to make the most of the time the Lord blesses you with them!

  4. She looks like me when I was here age. I wanted earrings in the worst way. I pray that God will give you wisdom in deciding what is the best solution. Have a great day!

  5. Oh, I hope Matt gives in. She would be so adorable. And I believe she would take such good care of her ears. And they do grow back if she someday decides otherwise. You can't even see where my mom's holes used to be.

    How is your Oma?

  6. My Abbigail got her ears pierced when she was 6, Bethany wanted hers done from that day on. I finally consented last March (she was 3 1/2. Both girls like their "sparkles" and are pretty good about letting me clean them regularly. They aren't too interested in changing them daily, so I don't have to do change them that often :o).
Abbigail cried a little when she got hers pierced, but my Andrew cried more FOR his sister. Bethany cried just for a moment until we showed her how pretty they were in the mirror, and then she couldn't smile big enough! I like their little sparkles, too!

I so totally agree with not piercing a child's ears before they are old enough to decide for themselves whether they WANT it done. It really bothers me to see tiny babies with their ears pierced. I think my mom made us wait until we were 12 or something like that. I got mine pierced and wore earrings a lot from then until high school. Then it lost its appeal. Now I only wear them on special occasions, maybe 2-3 times a year. Its a personal decision though. If Corynn wants them really badly I hope she can get them! :)

  8. The picture is adorable and your little girl is such a little lady.

My husband is even more reserved on the whole ear piercing. His thoughts? As our daughter(s) will one day belong to her husband, it is our future son-in-law's decision. That way, if he doesn't like holes in his wife's ears, they won't be there. If he doesn't mind or likes ear-rings, it's up to him.

At first, I thought this was silly. But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.

I know you didn't ask for opinions - I just thought it was interesting. Corynn is your little girl and you're doing a fantastic job with her. She's beautiful and will be with or without pierced ears at any age!!

  10. The doctor I work for pierces ears for babies, and it drives me nuts. I don't say anything, of course. This is a cultural thing, and the babies do look cute. But boy, do they scream! It's 1-2-3 quick, so I think it's more like someone holding them still than from it hurting. I think Corynn will do just fine because she'll know what's happening and won't be afraid.
However, it's possible there's a compromise. Don't they make magnetic earrings? You know, one side is pretty and the other side is a really strong magnet?
Tell Matt it could be worse...he could have a 24-year-old daughter like mine with 3 or 4 holes in each ear, LOL! (She's the best, but we won't talk about the tongue piercing...gaaak!)

  11. It's always best to follow your husband's lead. But you already know that. We did pierce when our daughters were infants. The doctor recommended it if we were going to do it at all. At Corynn's age, most kids play with them, can't stop touching them, etc. They generally end up infected. At this point, it's probably better to wait until she's older.

  12. I got my ears pierced when I was 17, and I've regretted it since I was about 20. I had 2 years of happiness before deciding I'd rather not have holes in my ears. Too bad they never grew together like everyone in the world told me they would. I haven't worn earrings in 7 years, and I'm stuck with these stupid, useless holes in my ears.

Not that my sad tale of woe would (or should) make a lick of difference to a 5-year old heavy with sparkly earring longing, though! I remember feeling the same way, prancing about the house with old lady clip-ons I'd picked up a rummage sale. (Now my girls do the same.) O, Real Earrings! The bliss!!! :)
