Makers Are We

Just some things we've been making these days.........

A welcome baby gift of snail pants (oh-how I love those snails!)

...and a leaf lay(or play)mat/blanket.  The inspiration for it was this

a puppy towel for nephew pool splashing:

and a frisky little tomato date for a friend:

Having the formal schooling done for the year now, it is amazing all the little pockets of time here and there that I find for frivolous things like making.

This is great because there are lots of reasons to make and lots of people to make things for.  Handmade gifts are the best kinds, you know.  In fact, I have begun to feel like I am cheating when I give something that isn't homemade.  A gift-giving guilt complex.  (strange.)

And I am not the only one bitten by the bug.  Seems these children take after me.  For the cousins' first birthday, Andrew made this little bunny finger puppet (which he did all sewing and everything for):

And Corynn made this pillow.

She did the embroidery on her own, without my knowledge (which is why it is made with all-purpose thread instead of embroidery!) and then, after she showed me, I suggested she make it into a pillow, which she did with just a few glances over her shoulders from the Mama.

Unfortunately for me, these don't count toward my handmade Christmas goals.

I still have three of those to do...in the next 10 days!  ;-)

  1. Ok Rebecca... I just have to know, where did you get the snail fabric and the meander brown fabric? That's super adorable!

And can you share the instructions for making a puppy towel? My toddler would go nuts for it. :)

  2. Are you alluding to a new addition to YOUR home, Rebecca...of the human kind? ;) The "welcome baby" snail stuff sort of hinted to it. ;) "In the making" kind of thing. I'm probably waaaaay off, but I thought I'd ask! :)

  3. That is precisely why my gifts are always months (years sometimes. cough. ahem.) late. I give handmade, and I have to know that I'm giving exactly what I think that person will like. we've been done with school for almost 2 weeks, and I'm still looking for those pockets of time... sigh. And baby will be here before I know it, or am ready.
Oh yeah, I like all the cute/lovely/inspiring handmade goodness!
Totally impressed by Corynn and Andrew. Totally.

  4. First of all, I LOVE all the things you've been making lately! They are so sweet and you did such a nice job on them! Second, you left a comment a moment ago on my blog that said "does it work" and I have no clue whatsoever what you are talking about! :)

  7. Leah S~ I got the snail fabric probably two years ago to make a boy jumpsuit thing for Judah and never did. I *think* I got it at JoAnns. The meadering fabric was given to me in several colors. I have no idea where they came from.

I might get a tutorial out there (I have one to make for Judah still) but until then-it is super simple. You take a regular bath towel and a matching bath towel and from the second you cut the edge off about a foot. This will be the hood. You fold it in half and sew down the back (the cut edge) and then center it on the other towel laying horizontally. That is the basic towel. Then you just add the ears (mine were free hand) by cutting four ear pieces, sewing them together, turning them inside out and sewing them to the hood.

    Ta-da!

I'll try and get a tute up but that will hold you over.

Regina~ sadly no. It is surprising, this being as long as I have ever gone in getting pregnant, but no womb baby yet. But making that little ensemble had me pining!

Bonnie~ And you always do make the most perfect gifts. It is SO worth the wait! ;-) I wrote you a letter last night and am mailing it today. You've been on my mind!
