What you do in your house is worth as much as if you did it up in heaven for our Lord God. We should accustom ourselves to think of our position and work as sacred and well-pleasing to God, not on account of the position and work, but on account of the word and faith from which the obedience and the work flow. ~ Martin Luther

Number Dos

Alright. I know I said TOMORROW I would post pictures if I got the dress done today...but I DID get it done and with 15 minutes to spare. Naturally, excitement overrules patience.

I am in love with this dress. It is made solely from curtain valances and a bit of ribbon...but you can't tell, can you?!?! It is charming and I wish I could keep it. I wish I had a REASON to keep it! ;-) One of the benefits of this here blogger is that the concept will be stored in my electronic brain, just waiting to bring inspiration to me for the time that I DO have a chance to make a little dress for a wee baby girl.

While it is precious, I am thankful you all don't have to see it in person. I made some mistakes-a few! But I guess that happens when you have absolutely no pattern, are dealing with a very wide but not tall piece of fabric, and you have to fudge your way through by trial and error.

I can't believe how quickly my goal is being reached. Only two more to go!

This is precious. Talk about a little nubian princess! I'm assuming you are sending for the african children?! I can just picture a precious dark-skinned babe wearing it, the creamy shimmer a beautiful contrast! I am truly impressed, and jealous of your talents Rebecca. You did a beautiful job!!!

Gorgeous, but looks a little fragile and easy to stain for an orphanage. Just a thought. Someone has to wash these clothes, after all. Are the ribbons a sturdy fastening? Will they stay on?

Do you mind if I put a link to your blog on my blog?

After I read anon. comment, I sort of have to agree, it is BEAUTIFUL but maybe not so practical. Maybe you should keep it for a future little girl of yours, and make a similar one of a more study nature, like a jumper? Just a thought, and I hope you aren't offended, because it truly is precious!!!

Maybe burlap would be a better material?

Anonymous and Elizabeth~ the dress is no more fragile than the skirt I made yesterday. The ribbons are stitched and back stitched again so they aren't coming off-ever. As for the color.... I thought of that as well. Perhaps the photo doesn't show but this dress is for a newborn. I figured the color would be safe since a baby doesn't do much more than lie about.

I wanted to create a dainty pretty dress because I thought if there was anyone in need of something beautiful-it would be those girls...and it would be all worth it to have them admire something dainty and to feel pretty. Even seeing a little baby in a beautiful dress might make them feel like they are cared for.

So-that is why I made it and that is why I will send it-happily, to meet its owner. Perhaps it isn't totally practical-but sometimes what people need is NOT practicality but extraordinary.

Charree~ I would be honored to be linked to your page!

I'm sorry Rebecca,
I hope I didn't offend you. You did a wonderful job on the dress, and I do agree that if anyone is in need of something pretty, it would be those little girls!

Just for the record, I don't think kids in orphanages deserve burlap or to wear ugly things. However, I have lived o/s of the US for many years and am aware that the facilities for washing delicate fabrics are somewhat different in many other countries than they are in the US. There are plenty of pretty things to make that are rugged, too, and I apologize for asking what seemed to me to be a reasonable question. I'm glad to hear the dress is sturdy and easily washable for the girls and their caretakers--perhaps in a washing machine, perhaps in a boiling pot, perhaps on a rock in a stream--that was my only concern.

I think that this dress is absolutely adorable! You have inspired me to look for valances and such that I can make dresses for my daughter...or her dolly. ;)

Rebecca,
What a fantastic idea to use valances to make this beautiful dress. It will surely make some lucky girl feel like a princess. The skirts you made are adorable as well. Both the ivory & the bright colors will no doubt compliment their skin color and make them feel beautiful. You are very kind & thoughtful to want to make these girls feel special.
Have a great day.
Victoria =)

The dresses, plain and fancy will be as exciting for the little girl who gets it as it was for the maker. I am glad you took the time to think about someone who's needs are greater than any you might have. After all who, doesn't feel special when they get something nice, even if it is something so nice they never thought such a gift was possible.

I love this. It kind of reminds me of the sundress you brought back from your honeymoon for Mildred.
